| Description: A walk to the iconic Worm's Head which is cut off at high tide plus a short stretch of the Coast Path with some steep cliffs. Planning is Essential to ensure that the Worm's Head part of the walk fits in with tides. Crossing is possible for roughly two and a half hours either side of low tide - see Tide Tables Courtesy of Ryan Blundell. Exact crossing times are posted by the crossing point. If going the whole length to Outer Head, allow at least 2 hours from the Lookout Station and back as progress can be slow over uneven rocks and boulders. If the tide is too high at the start, head for the eastern part of the walk first. This can be extended by going further along the Coast Path if wished. Start at the bottom end of the National Trust Car Park (Pay and Display - free to members) and either follow the path near the western cliffs or tracks through fields to the E depending on timing of tides. When crossing first becomes possible progress to the island is more difficult as only uneven ridges of rock are exposed but as the tide recedes, easier options open up, though the going is still slow. Once on the island there is the option of following the ridges to get the best views or skirting around the edges for easier walking. After Inner Head there is a shorter but more difficult scramble over the rough rocks of Low Neck to reach Devil's Bridge which has another high or low option. The final climb up Outer Head is fairly steep with a rock climb to the left of the path to reach the summit (not too difficult and worth it for view). Return to the mainland taking either high or low level options then take the opposite route back to the start. | ||
