Description:
This is an alternative to the very busy main routes up Snowdon, though it does involve considerably more ascent.
Starting from Llanberis, it takes a path to the west of the Mountain Railway passing a waterfall then heading in the opposite direction from the Llanberis Path to Snowdon. It then follows a curved ascent to the summit of Moel Eilio (726m) with stunning views over Llyn Dwythwch and back towards Llanberis as well as of Snowdon itself.
Then follows a little-walked ridge route, now heading towards Snowdon summit over Foel Gron (593m), Foel Goch (605m) and Moel Cynghorion (674m) then down to join the Snowdon Ranger Path at 677m. This path starts at the Youth Hostel by Llyn Cwellyn and is not so busy as most walkers travel from the East not the West.
From here, it now ascends a steep ridge with a series of zigzags making it easier until the slope eventually becomes less steep as it heads towards the railway to join the Llanberis Path not far from the summit. There are superb views most of the way with less of the crowds. The final 500 metres beside the railway to the summit becomes busy as the most popular routes are joined but this is unavoidable.
Return to Llanberis
The return route takes the Llanberis Path which roughly follows the railway line, meeting up with it a few times. Though quite busy, this path is wider than than that of the Pyg Track route which can frequently be a bottleneck. It is also a fairly steady descent so less taxing on the legs and knees.
